In his new work, the Austrian composer Bernhard Gander grapples with the primary force of the elements and mankind’s struggle against nature. Even the title Oozing Earth evokes images of a groaning, bleeding planet, rearing up one last time with a dark moan. For this ultimate lament, Gander combines the musicians of Ensemble Modern with two stars of the metal scene. Flo Monier, the Extreme Metal Drummer of the band Cryptopsy, and Attila Csihar, Mayhem singer and voice of the cult band Sunn O))) – two virtuoso musicians whose primal scream-like singing and machine-like rhythms embody human vulnerability and brutality. Enormous energies are released and blended in a gloomy forecast of humanity’s future.
The Norwegian composer, instrumentalist and music producer Helge Sten specializes in building bridges between experimental electronic music and the individual sound of acoustic instruments. Since the early 1990s he has developed his special, recognizable sound. His is an atmospherically dense and grainy minimalism which slows down time and examines the individual particles of sound in depth. For Ensemble Modern, he is writing a work in which he himself takes on the electronics part as a »band member«. Sten is a founding member of the Norwegian improvisation group Supersilent and has worked with such diverse artists as Biosphere and Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones.
